Jewellery Changes Made Easier
Jewellery Changes for Healed Piercings
Guide pins can make changing jewellery through fully healed piercings easier by helping guide the post smoothly into place.
If your piercing is new, irritated, swollen or difficult to access, please book a professional jewellery fitting instead of changing it yourself.
Common Questions
How often should I clean my piercing?
Clean your piercing twice daily using a sterile saline solution such as NeilMed Piercing Aftercare Fine Mist. Spray the front and back of the piercing, allow any dried discharge to soften, then gently rinse away in the shower. Avoid over-cleaning, as this can irritate the piercing and slow healing.
Can I use salt water?
We recommend using a sterile saline solution rather than homemade salt water. Homemade mixtures can contain too much or too little salt, which may irritate your piercing. Sterile saline is gentle, convenient and specifically designed for wound care.
When can I change my jewellery?
Do not change your jewellery until your piercing has fully healed or your piercer has advised it is safe to do so. Changing jewellery too early can cause irritation, delay healing or even damage the piercing channel. If you’re unsure, please get in touch before attempting to change your jewellery.
Can I swim?
It’s best to avoid swimming during the early stages of healing, particularly in pools, hot tubs, lakes and the sea, as these environments can expose your piercing to bacteria and chemicals. If swimming cannot be avoided, rinse your piercing thoroughly with sterile saline afterwards.
Is my piercing infected?
Some redness, tenderness, swelling and a small amount of clear or pale yellow discharge are all normal during healing. If your piercing becomes increasingly painful, hot, swollen, produces thick green or yellow discharge, develops a strong odour or you feel generally unwell, seek advice from a healthcare professional. If you’re unsure whether your piercing is healing normally, we’re always happy to take a look.
What should I avoid?
Avoid touching your piercing with unwashed hands, twisting or rotating the jewellery, sleeping directly on healing ear piercings, using alcohol, tea tree oil, peroxide or homemade remedies, and changing your jewellery too soon. Keeping your piercing clean, dry and undisturbed gives it the best chance to heal.
What if I have a bump?
Most piercing bumps are caused by irritation rather than true keloids. Pressure, movement, sleeping on the piercing, incorrect jewellery fit, accidental knocks or unsuitable aftercare products are common causes.
