Threadless Jewellery, Made Simple

A gentle guide to understanding threadless ends, labret posts and guide pins — so your jewellery feels secure, comfortable and easy to wear.

A small adjustment makes all the difference

Threadless jewellery is designed to hold securely through gentle tension. The decorative end has a small pin, which fits into a hollow labret post or barbell. A slight bend in the pin creates the tension needed to keep the jewellery in place.

This guide is here to help you understand how threadless jewellery works, how guide pins can make insertion easier, and when it is best to let a professional piercer help.

Important note:

For healed piercings only. If your piercing is new, irritated, swollen or difficult to access, please book a professional fitting rather than forcing jewellery in yourself.

What is threadless jewellery?

Threadless jewellery is also known as push-fit or press-fit jewellery. Instead of using a screw thread, the jewellery is held together by tension between the decorative end and the hollow post.
When adjusted correctly, the end should push in securely and pull apart with firm, controlled pressure.
Threadless jewellery should feel secure, but it should never need to be forced.
  • 01 — Insert the pin slightly

Place the pin around one third of the way into the hollow post. This gives you control before making any adjustment.

  • 02 — Add a gentle bend

Gently bend the pin by around 10–20 degrees. A slightly stronger bend can create a tighter fit, but avoid over-bending.

  • 03 — Push the end fully in

Once adjusted, line the pin up with the post and push the decorative end fully into place.

  • Remove with care

To remove, pull the end and post apart with steady pressure. If it feels tight, a small twisting motion can help release the tension.

What is a guide pin used for?

A guide pin is a simple tool that helps guide jewellery through a healed piercing channel. It can make changing jewellery easier, especially in placements that are harder to see or reach, such as helix, flat, conch, tragus and nostril piercings.

The guide pin connects to or sits with the jewellery post, helping you move the post through the piercing more smoothly and with less guesswork.

Best for:

  • healed piercings
  • changing labret posts
  • inserting jewellery in harder-to-reach placements
  • reducing fumbling when changing jewellery at home

Not for:

  • fresh piercings
  • angry, swollen or irritated piercings
  • forcing jewellery through a tight channel
  • replacing professional help when the jewellery will not go in easily

  • Common fit issues

Remove the end and add the smallest extra bend to the pin. Test again before bending further. Small adjustments are safer than one big bend.

  • My jewellery feels too tight

Do not force it. The pin may be over-bent, the post may be too tight, or the angle may not be lining up correctly.

  • I cannot get the post through

Use a guide pin only on healed piercings. If the piercing feels sore, tight or resistant, book a professional fitting.

FAQ 7 — What about curved or circular barbells?

FAQ 1 — Can I bend a threadless pin myself?

Yes, but only gently. The bend should be subtle and controlled. If you are unsure, or if the jewellery is expensive, delicate or stone-set, a professional piercer can adjust it safely for you.

FAQ 2 — How much should I bend the pin?

For standard labret posts and straight barbells, around 10–20 degrees is usually enough. Start small and test the fit before adjusting further.

FAQ 3 — Why does my threadless end keep falling out?

The pin may not have enough tension, the post may not be compatible, or the pin may not be fully inserted. Remove the jewellery safely and check the fit before wearing it again.

FAQ 4 — Why will my threadless end not go in?

The pin may be over-bent, misaligned, or the post may not be the correct size. Do not force it, especially while wearing it in the piercing.

FAQ 5 — Can I use a guide pin on a new piercing?

No. Guide pins are best for healed piercings. Fresh piercings should be changed or adjusted by a professional piercer.

FAQ 6 — Can I use threadless ends with any post?

Not always. Threadless ends and posts need to be compatible, and fit quality can vary between jewellery brands and manufacturers.

For the safest and most secure fit, we recommend using high-quality, APP-approved labret posts from trusted professional jewellery brands. This helps ensure the jewellery fits correctly, sits comfortably, and maintains the standard expected for body piercing jewellery.
